5 Attributes that put your job application at the top of the pile

After years of experience, our recruitment team have written down a list of the top attributes that will put your job application ahead of the rest. Since there is no silver bullet when it comes to landing a job, we provide as many helpful blogs and resources to graduates, like you, to help improve your job search journey.

These 5 attributes are sought-after by employers looking to hire graduates and interns. If you have these attributes, add them to your CV or demonstrate how you’ve experienced them through your life experience or internship in your cover letter.

  1. Productive

Since the working world has changed over the recent years to include hybrid working, being an intentionally productive person is at the forefront of attributes employers seek out. Show you’re productive by the way you write your CV. Keep it neat, edited, honest and inclusive of key bits of information such as any awards, milestones you’ve reached or examples of successful projects or programmes you’ve completed.

Tip: Fast Company, Forbes, and other thought leader platforms have many articles on productivity in the new ways of working. We encourage you to read some and action them in your career.

  1. Can-do attitude

Maintaining a positive and can-do attitude in the workplace is a sign of good character and is a good approach to almost any work environment. Showing a willingness to learn demonstrates a positive attitude which many companies look for when hiring graduates. Demonstrate this in your job application by sharing some of the courses you’ve done and volunteering experience. Make sure the tone in your cover letter is positive.

  1. Team-player

With so many new jobs on the market, some of which didn’t exist just a few years ago, companies need to leverage many different skills to get a project done. If you are a team player, then you’ll fit right in wherever you work. Show potential employers this attribute by briefly highlighting an example of a successful collaborative experience you’ve had in the past through your motivational letter. They may ask you more about it in a job interview so speak about this with confidence.

  1. Multi-skilled

This might seem obvious, but growing your skill set is a sure win in the workplace. Employers value a graduate employee who brings more to the table than meets the eye. It is important to identify any additional skills that you bring to the table as a value add to benefit your future employer. What special gifts do you have that no one knows about? Share them in your CV or highlight them in your cover letter.

  1. Detail-oriented

Employers will often write ‘detail-oriented’ in job specs. If you don’t see yourself as a detail-oriented person, then now is the time to become one. Simply start paying more attention to detail in your work, and you’ll sharpen your skills. Make sure your CV and cover letter has been edited and there are no spelling errors as this sets the tone of how well you pay attention to detail.
